About SAA
Our story
We were founded in 1966 by Peggy Henderson and her colleagues, originally to deal with the large numbers of animals displaced by housing clearance in the Hulme area of Manchester. We gained charity status the following year, and have been rescuing and rehoming cats and rabbits ever since.
Sixty years on, we’re still based in Manchester, still independent, and still guided by the same principle Peggy started us on: every animal that comes to us gets the care it needs, for as long as it takes to find the right home.
In the last five years, we’ve rehomed
Every animal is given a full health check, vaccinated, neutered and microchipped before adoption. We also carry out a home check on every potential new home, to give each animal the best possible start.
Run by people, not by government funding
We’re staffed by a small team of paid employees, backed by a great number of committed volunteers, and funded entirely by donors, partners and our own fundraising.
